Fieldwork workflows

Make a recording useful after the moment has passed

A good field record answers more than “What was said?” Voice Voyager helps you keep the sound, the moment on a route, a photo or sketch, and your written interpretation together. These examples show how to use that combination in real work.

Walking interview or reported visit

A journalist following a guide through a neighborhood can record the conversation while the route is captured. When the guide points out a building, take a photo or add a quick drawing during the active Track recording. Later, seeking through the audio moves the map position, and the attachment marker brings up the visual observation near its spoken context.

  1. Choose Track before recording, if place is relevant and location permission is available.
  2. Record the walk and add photos or drawings at the moments you want to find again.
  3. After saving, write a short Markdown summary and add consistent tags for the place, source, or story.
  4. Review the route and markers in the full-screen map. Export the entry or a GPX, KML, or GeoJSON route when a separate handoff is needed.

GPS inside audio explains how the route can stay with the recording file and what that means when sharing it.

Field survey or inspection

A field researcher or inspector can make one diary entry for each pass, location, or observation. Audio captures spoken findings immediately; photos and sketches record details that are easier to show than describe. The calendar, title search, and repeated tags make it possible to find the same place or issue across visits.

  1. Select a quality that fits the expected session length and storage available. Use Track for a moving pass or Start/End for a short visit.
  2. Speak observations while moving. Add a photo or sketch during the recording to place it along a usable Track.
  3. Use the note editor for measurements, conditions, follow-up questions, checklists, and links.
  4. Tag entries by site, project, or topic, then use the Diary calendar and tag frequency view to review the whole series.

Voice Voyager rejects obvious GPS outliers, but coordinates remain an aid to field review rather than a survey measurement.

Long interview or oral history

For a stationary interview, Start/End can be enough location context; GPS Off is available when place should not be recorded. Pause and resume to keep one session together across interruptions. On Android, Safe long recording saves durable parts during capture, giving you a recovery path if the app or device stops before the entry is complete.

  1. Check microphone access, free storage, background recording, and battery settings before an important session.
  2. On Android, enable Safe long recording for a long session. Leave enough free space for the completed recording.
  3. After saving, title the interview, add key topics as tags, and note the moments you will want to revisit.
  4. Make a separate archive or cloud copy. If a session was interrupted, open Settings → Unrecovered recordings, scan, and recover the saved parts before deleting anything.

Review, handoff, and archive

The Player can slow or speed audio, seek, and open the full-screen route map. For supported M4A recordings, the audio editor can trim, remove, extract, or split a selection and save a copy or replace the original. The Diary keeps written context searchable even when an archive grows large.

A full archive ZIP keeps the diary entry, audio, notes, images, and route together. The separate Windows and macOS diary reader can open that archive for read-only review, play recordings, search notes, and follow routes while audio plays. Public installer availability may differ from the mobile release. See Sync, backup, and export for provider and archive choices.

Choose the right amount of context

Fastest capture

Record first, then add a title and a few tags. You can return to the note and attachments later.

Place matters

Use Track, add observations during capture, and review them against the timed playback map.

Place is sensitive

Choose GPS Off before recording. Embedded location can travel with shared audio, and imported photos can carry their own coordinates.

Archive matters

Export a full diary ZIP in addition to any optional provider sync so the record stays portable.
